Thriller movies, or specifically Psychological thrillers often place an innocent victim into a strange, life-threatening or terrorising situation due to a case of mistaken identity/misidentification. The genre often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre (sometimes bordering the horror genre) in addition to the typical elements of the thriller genre.
Directors typically use women who are subjected to misogynistic abuse, threatening humiliation or murder. They explore the darker sides of human nature through sexuality, guilt, paranoia, punishment and obsession. Unbearable suspense is created for the viewers as a horrific event is made inevitable.
The story line will usually follow the main character battling with themselves - in conflict with a mental illness or strong emotions. Usually thrillers are intense leaving the audience with a lot to think about. For example 'American Psycho' directed by Mary Harron.
