We knew immediately that we weren't reaching to a younger teenage audience therefore we immediately ruled out the 12 rating as we believe we could not include a variety of codes and conventions by setting it this low, seeing as our target audience is 16-19 years.
We went onto the BBFC website and researched into the different age classifications.
- No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year
olds and above.
In a 15, you may see:
- strong violence
- frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
- portrayals of sexual activity
- strong verbal references to sex
- sexual nudity
- brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
- discriminatory language or behaviour
- drug taking
- No theme is prohibited at 18. Adults are free to choose their own entertainment provided the material is not illegal or potentially harmful, so it is possible some themes tackled at 18 may be offensive even to some adult viewers.
In an 18 you may see:
- very strong violence
- frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
- strong portrayals of sexual activity
- scenes of sexual violence
- strong horror
- strong blood and gore
- real sex (in some circumstances)
- discriminatory language and behaviour
From our research, we decided that we would rate our film with the 15 classification as it meets the guidelines of a 15 set by the BBFC however is not as strongly offensive as an 18 can be. It addresses issues of 16-19 year olds and therefore is capable of being a 15.
